Washington Glass School Open House and Art Sale

This Saturday May 15th, I'll be showing work at the Washington Glass School's 9th Anniversary Open House and Art Sale. If you attended my January exhibit Saints and Fables, this is your chance to pick up one of the few remaining pieces.

What's more, the open house coincides with the Gateway Arts District's Open Studio Tours as part of the Mount Rainier Day events.

Come in the morning for the Mt Rainier Day parade and stick around for the huge selection of art and craft from over 20 instructors, associates and studio artists. Be sure to also visit the surrounding ceramics studios and other art studios in the complex.

Saints and Fables - exhibit open

Friday, with the help of Don Depuydt, printmaking professor at Northern Virginia Community College (NoVaCC), I installed my current exhibition "Saints and Fables" at the Waddell Gallery of NoVaCC Loudoun campus...

Solo show in January

I've been very busy over the past few months preparing for a solo exhibition in January. I was invited by The Waddell Art Gallery at Northern Virginia Community College in Sterling, VA.

The exhibition will be on view from January 11th until February 12th. A gallery talk will be held on Wednesday January 20th at noon, and a reception will take place on Friday January 22nd 6:30pm - 8:30pm.

Preparing for January solo show

I've been busy over the past few weeks. I've officially switched in to high gear for the preparations for my January solo exhibition at Norther Virginia Community College. Special thanks to the crew at the Washington Glass School for all the help last week. I've casted five new glass pieces that will soon be installed into wooden boxes for the show. Glass Evolving

Last month I was juried in to and exhibition entitled Glass Evolving at Visarts in Rockville, MD. Two pieces will be on display at this exhibition from September 10th through November 15th. The exhibit features work by some of the best local and regional glass artists. The opening reception will be Wednesday September 10th, 6:30-8:30pm, all are welcome.

2009 Visual Arts Applicants' Showcase

Today I dropped off a piece at the Katzen Arts Center for the DCCAH applicants showcase. The opening reception is Wednesday July 16th at 6:30. The exhibition will be on display July 17 through August 1 at the Katzen (4400 Massachusetts Ave NW - google map)

This is an interesting exhibition because it includes work from around 60 local artists that have one thing in common. We've all applied for a DCCAH 2009 Fellowship. Only about 40 of us will be chosen, so I'm sure you'll be able to sense the collective finger crossing as you view the work.

Monday morning as I strolled in to work, a favorite colleague accosted me: "Did you do it?! I KNOW it was you!!!" Turns out I've been fingered as one of four possible suspects in (drum roll) ...the collector capers!

I'd love to see them catch the collector so I can be exonerated...but I'm not holding my breath.

Artomatic update

A week and a half is left for Artomatic 2008 and I thought I'd take a moment to provide a progress report. Since it's 'all about me' Let me start by saying thank you to the bloggers out there that have given me a mention. We all know how tough is to get press, so it's a real treat to see my name out there...

Making Crafts in the Woods includes a detail picture of my piece "The Elephant and the Asp" Thanks Barb!

Moving right along, just wanted to give a reminder that I will be at Artomatic this Sunday the 8th at 2pm along with Sean Hennessey and Cheryl Derricotte to give a tour of the work presented by artists from the Washington Glass School. Hope to see you there!

Also, big word of thanks to everyone that left a comment in my book. Especially Penelope Higgenbottom, wherever (or whoever) you may be.

And finally, if you're walking around the exhibit, take a moment to look at the poems taped to each space. These poems are written by Brash. Each Artomatic, she takes the time and energy to write a poem for every exhibiting artist. They are insightful and altogether lovely. It's such a pleasant surprise to find one taped to the wall, thank you Brash!

I've just finished work on three new pieces in preparation for an upcoming exhibit entitled: Glass3. Glass art institutions in three cities (Washington, DC, Toledo, Ohio, and Sunderland, England) that have a strong tradition in glass art (read more about that here at: Daily Campello Art News) have hand-picked artists to represent them here in Washington, DC in the heart of Georgetown. Artomatic 2007

After a steady two weeks of frantic preparation, last night Artomatic opened in Crystal City. Some early favorites of mine -- Elizabeth Lundberg Morisette, Katie McKelvie, Steve Strawn, and Novie Trump. As in previous years, there's a lot of not-so-good, BUT, as always there are definitely some gems. Not that I ever want to become a critic, but the four mentioned above are certainly worth checking out.

Yesterday I delivered my first "artist talk" at the Printmakers Gallery. It was very successful...10-15 attended and most appeared engaged and interested. Special thanks to Sean Hennessey who took time off from his busy schedule to help discuss the concrete techniques I used for the show and also to Michael Janis who provided me with very detailed information to present about the glass techniques. Thanks also to everyone that showed up. It inspired me to make a photo journal to descibe the processes I used for the show.

Also, thought I'd note that I got a mention on DC Art News and Sean Hennessey offers his thoughts on the show at his blog Paint and Plaster. ...and drum roll please....Wonkette mentioned the show as "Cute woodcuts by Kirk Waldroff" under the post "6/9 To Do: Bouffants, Buffalonians, or the Homosexual Agenda" (not sure how I fit in there). Thanks Sean, Lenny, and Wonkette for the mention!

my first gallery solo

On Memorial Day I installed my first solo gallery show at the Washington Printmakers Gallery. The show includes traditional printmaking techniques such as woodcut and linocuts, as well as never before seen techniques that combine new glass and concrete casting processes with the printmaking process.

Art Mondays

For the past several months, I've been getting together with fellow artists Kristina Bilonick, Rania Hassan, and Sean Hennessy on Monday nights to create collaborative pieces.

It started out as a once a week meeting at each other's studios to make large collages on paper. However, currently we've been meeting out at a bar or cafe to make smaller drawings.

This past Monday, we met at the Argonaut - Rated "Best New Bar" by the Art Monday group - it is by far the best spot we've found to work, and the staff seem to genuinely appreciate us being there! (and they've added a photo of us working!)

Getting ready for my June show

In June I'll be having my very first solo art exhibition. I'm already getting nervous about being prepared because I'm a notorious procrastinator. I'm feeling good about it though, because I'm off to a great start. This past weekend I spent some time at the Washington Glass School working on a glass piece for the show.

I start with a woodblock carving (which I will later pull prints from)...

Then, thanks to the wonders of a technique the fellas at the Glass School have been developing, I create a cast glass replica of the carving...

This opens the door to a lot of possibilities and fulfills a personal goal of mine to expand printmaking methods into other mediums. Imagine how many types of images I can now create based on one woodblock carving!

Many many thanks to Mike Janis, Tim Tate, and Erwin Timmers at the Washington Glass School for their patient and invaluable help on this project!

Illustration Friday is a cool grass-roots-y-ish art project. It's simple, they give a topic each Friday, and everyone illustrates it. Obviously, the topic this week is cats. Thanks to a shoofly and a scenic artisan (both of whom I work with in a collaborative art group) for telling me about it!

Miriam's Kitchen

I'm tired because I got up too early this morning, and couldn't sleep last night. Why? Who knows about the insomnia, but as for getting up too early...looks like once a month, God willin' and the creek don't rise, I'll be helping out at Miriam's Kitchen. The shift runs from 6 to 8. I'm not writing this to toot my horn, I'm writing as segue to: it's cold and people need clothes. SO if you have clothes that are in good shape that you'd like to get rid of, check out what they are currently in need of. The operation there is AMAZINGLY impressive, so any donations are in good hands.

Oh, and also, there are some talented artists that both eat and volunteer there, so if you're ever up for spending a morning volunteering you'll get to see some interesting stuff.
